Jane Shang
Jane Dawson Shang was born in upstate New York, and spent her school years in New York State and New Hampshire. A graduate of Smith College with an AB in Economics and Art History, she was awarded a graduate fellowship to study at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, from Rotary International. This experience launched her career in International Financial Markets, and fueled her passion for understanding world cultures.
Jane and husband Paul Shang met at work at Lehman Brothers in NYC, married in 1987, and were transferred to Tokyo, Japan in 1989. From there they moved to Hong Kong in 1990. They lived in Asia for 10 years, and then moved to London in January of 1998, where they resided for 6 years, followed by the family’s move to Greenwich in 2003. Their two children, Matthew and Margot were both active members at St. Barnabas during their school years. Margot enjoyed her experience in the Youth Choir, and they both were Confirmed at St. Barnabas. While living full time in Greenwich, Jane chaired, volunteered, and donated to numerous non-profit organizations including schools and initiatives for the underserved.
In 2012, Jane and Paul returned to London for Paul’s next chapter in International Banking at Standard Bank of South Africa. This opened up many new exciting opportunities, and Jane has spent the past 8 years researching and producing her first Documentary Film, Where I Became. She and her SA business partner, Tandiwe Njobe, met through contacts at Standard Bank. The film shares the true stories of 14 South African women of color, who left home, family, and apartheid SA to pursue their dreams of education at Smith College.
Jane has moved frequently in her adult life, but she always returns to the wonderful community at St. Barnabas. She’s very grateful for this opportunity to work on the vestry, and looks forward to connecting with new members, and old friends at Church.
