Too Good Not to Be True
Christians proclaim that God resurrected Jesus of Nazareth from the dead so that, when we die, we will likewise be resurrected to eternal life. Moreover, Christians say that this is all given us free of charge, purely out of God’s unconditional love for us and for all of His creation. This is the Gospel, and it sounds too good to be true. In his Easter sermon, Father Justin points out that the disciples themselves found the resurrection too good to be true. But they subsequently had experiences of the risen Christ so powerful that they gave up their fear and started a movement devoted to proclaiming the good news to the world, even when belonging to that movement meant dying at the hands of those who killed Jesus too. The resurrection is more than the resuscitation of a corpse. The resurrection is what brings courage out of cowardice and hope out of despair—even today.
