Now He Has Spoken Through a Son
St. Barnabas’ guest, Maggi Dawn, tackles one of the most difficult passages in the New Testament: Jesus’ teaching on divorce. She takes a closer look at the intense debate Jesus finds himself in when he’s asked about divorce. She focuses on Jesus’ reference to the garden of Eden at the beginning of his teaching. Jesus is saying, in a perfect world, there would be no divorce—and no war, no violence, no heartbreak, no corruption. But we do not live in a perfect world, and sometimes we have to make the best of things. God gave us the moral law as a life preserver to help us through the imperfect world, but now God has done something even greater: he has come to us personally directly through a Son, who knows all the pain of the real, not the ideal, world, because he knows the cross.
